Committee Descriptions
1st Grade Square
Dance - October 6, 2011
This
Committee organizes and executes the 1st Grade Square Dance. Volunteers needed on the night of the dance, to help with
decorations, setup and cleanup. You should be a first grade parent
to volunteer for this event.
Beautification - ongoing
This
committee beautifies our school by maintaining the gardens and
courtyard, and providing seasonal displays. Volunteers needed In the Spring on Beautification Day. If you love
to garden, please consider signing-up.
Blood Drive - Fall: October 17, 2011; Spring: March 29, 2012
This
committee organizes two Blood Drives - Fall and Spring - enabling
our community to "Give the Gift of Life." Volunteers needed In November and March to call prospective donors,
act as greeters, and donate baked goods.
Book Fair - Fall: October 17, 2011; Spring: April 2, 2012
This
committee organizes our Book Fairs in the fall and the spring. Volunteers needed For the Spring Book Fair to help with set-up,
children’s shopping and clean-up. A schedule will be set-up by the
Chairpeople based on your availability.

Box Tops- ongoing
This
committee encourages Ocean's students to collect Box Tops (from
specially marked products) by running contests throughout the school
year. The Box Tops collected are redeemed for money that goes
directly to the PTA. Volunteers needed Two or three times a year to help with clipping
and counting Box Tops and/or assist at classroom reward parties.

Chess Club - TBA
This
committee organizes Ocean's student Chess Club. Volunteers needed Once a week to chaperone players and assist with
dismissal of club. Chess skills are taught by professional
players. A volunteer chaperone schedule will be set up by the
Chairperson based on your availability.

Classroom Parents
This
committee organizes and supports our Class Parents throughout the
school year. Volunteers
needed Volunteers are not needed at this time. Please sign up if
you would be interested in working with the current Chairpeople now
and chairing this committee yourself in the future. The majority of
this committees work is done in June, late August and early
September.
Cow Harbor Day
Parade - September 18, 2011
This
committee arranges Ocean Avenue's participation in the Cow Harbor
Day Parade. Volunteers needed To help decorate the float on the morning of the
parade. We encourage everyone to march with us!
Cultural Arts - ongoing
This
committee arranges Cultural Arts presentations for our students
throughout the year. There
are no volunteers needed for individual Cultural Arts presentations.
Directory - ongoing
The School
Directory is an essential tool for our families and we like it to be
as error-free as possible. Volunteers needed In late September to proofread the Directory
before its published and distributed.

Fall Harvest Fair - October 14, 2011
It’s the hard work of many different sub-committees that make our Fall Harvest Fair such a success. Volunteers needed Sub-Committee Chairpeople are needed to organize one part of this great day. Sub-Committees are; Refreshments, Raffles, Ticket Sales, Volunteers, Bake Sale, Games, Prizes, Set-Up and Clean-Up. Must be willing to work with the Fall Fair Chairpeople and attend organizational meetings, overall volunteers can alert chairpeople about their availability to help prior to or on the day of the fair.

Admission Bracelets
This committee sells admission bracelets to the children during their lunch time in the cafeteria. Volunteers needed for the week leading up to the fail fair and day of to man the bracelet table.

This committee organizes the bake sale at the Fall Fair. Volunteers needed to bake items prior to the fair &/or help with actual sales during the fair.

This committee organizes the cupcake decorating station at the Fall Fair. Volunteers needed to help purchase supplies prior to the fair &/or help during the actual fair.

This committee organizes the decorations, balloons and tents for the Fall Fair. This committee needs volunteers to help prior to the fair date to plan out & procure the decorations &/or set up on the day of the actual fair.

Games/Activities
This committee organizes the games and activities for the Fall Fair -including planning, procurement and setup. The volunteers can alert the chairpeople about their availability prior to the fair &/or the day of the fair.
Fall Harvest Fair - Prizes
This committee will be in charge of what is considered the kid's favorite part of the fair-the prizes. The committee will be responsible for inventory & procurement of the prizes of various levels prior to the fair; plus the set up and manning the prize table during the actual date of the fair.

Raffles
This committee coordinates donations, organizes the raffle baskets and raffle basket ticket sales for the Fall Fair. -It involves preparation work before the fall fair and then set up and manning the raffle table on the day of the fair.

This committee organizes the refreshments (drinks, popcorn, cotton candy, hot dogs etc.) for the Fall Fair.

Volunteers
This committee is crucial to the success of the fall fair by scheduling & coordinating the volunteers by shifts who man the various games and events during the Fall Fair. Includes reaching out to the middle and high schools for school age volunteers. Volunteers are needed both prior to the fair and are critical during the actual day.

Family Challenge
Live - March 9, 2011
Family
Challenge Live is Ocean's very own version of a family game show,
complete with a Hollywood-style set up of lights, buzzers and live
host. Everyone gets to participate. Volunteers needed To help with promotional flyers and ticket sales,
as well as on the night of the show - to help with set-up and
clean-up.

Night is a fun night for Ocean families to meet in the All-Purpose
Room and play board games and puzzle challenges. An impressive
selection of games, etc. is provided. Volunteers needed To help with set-up and clean-up.

Night at a LI Ducks Game is great springtime fun for our families. Volunteers needed In Spring to assist the Chairperson with ticket

Nights are fun nights for Ocean families to meet in the All-Purpose

Family Picnic is an enjoyable end-of-the-year evening when
families meet on the playground and picnic together with music and

Zingo is
Ocean's very own version of Bingo. Families meet in the All-Purpose
Room for a fun and friendly competition. Prizes are awarded. Volunteers needed on Zingo Night to help with Set-Up and Clean-Up.

Field Day - June 18, 2012
Fun and
friendly athletic competition for our students on the Ocean Ave
fields is capped off by a lunchtime barbecue. Volunteers needed To help run the games and/or assist in set-up,
serving and clean-up of lunch.

Fitness is Fun
Run/Walk - Month of May 2012
A month-long
lunchtime challenge for out 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Students use
their recess time to complete laps around the athletic fields. Volunteers needed During lunchtime in May to record student's
progress. A volunteer schedule will be set-up by the Chairpeople
based on your availability.
Food Drive - February 6, 2012
This
committee organizes 2 food drives each school year to donate to
Northport's own Ecumenical Lay Council Food Pantry. The pantry
supports over 100 local families in need. Volunteers needed To help sort, pack-up and deliver donated food.
Health and Safety -
3-4
district-wide meetings (usually in the afternoons) to discuss health
and safety issues that come up at all of the district schools. Volunteers needed Need 2 representatives.
Holiday Boutique - December 5, 2011
This
committee opens a "Holiday Gift Shop" each December right in the
All-Purpose Room allowing students to purchase surprise gifts for
their families. Volunteers
needed In December to help students shop within their budgets, and
for set-up and clean-up. A volunteer schedule will be set-up by the
Chairperson based on your availability.
Kindergarten
Orientation
This
committee works closely with our School Counselor and the
Kindergarten teachers to provide a positive introduction to Ocean
Ave for incoming students and their parents. Volunteers needed Needed to escort the children on a tour of the
building and provide them with a snack. This is a once a year
commitment, in May.

Lost and Found - ongoing
This
committee organizes the MANY items that are "lost" at Ocean, in
hopes that they will be "found". Volunteers needed Twice a year to arrange lost items on tables in
the hallway thereby making them more visible to parents and
students, as well as to donate all items to charity that remain
uncollected.

Membership/Dues - Throughout Fall
This
committee organizes our Membership Drive in the Fall. Volunteers needed At Open House - to help sell Membership cards.
MST - Spring 2012

Ocean Ave T-Shirts - ongoing
This
committee runs our T-Shirt and Sweatshirt sales in the Fall and
Spring. Volunteers needed
In the Fall and Spring to work with the Chairperson sorting and
delivering the T-Shirts or Sweatshirts to each classroom.

Ocean Kids - TBA
This
Newspaper - By Ocean Kids and For Ocean Kids - is traditionally
published once in the Fall and once in the Spring. Chairpeople
act as Editors, solicit articles and layout the documents. A
computer and knowledge of publishing software is necessary.
Pie Sales - November 2011
This
committee runs our Pie Sale each year at Thanksgiving. (The pies
provided by Copenhagen Bakery!) Volunteers needed the Tuesday before Thanksgiving to help with the
distribution of pies.

Playground
Equipment - ongoing
This
committee oversees the supply of playground recess equipment in the
PTA recess shed. Volunteers
needed To be a Chairperson or Chairpeople for this committee.
Chairpeople will be responsible for overseeing and stocking the PTA
Recess Shed. All expenses will be reimbursed by the PTA.
Popcorn - ongoing
This
committee is essential now that our PTA owns its very own popcorn
machine. Chairpeople are responsible for learning how to use the
machine, training others, and setting up volunteers to provide
popcorn at various PTA events and parties. Volunteers needed To be a Chairperson, as well as individual
volunteers to pop popcorn at one or more PTA events.

PTA Bulletin Board - ongoing
This
committee periodically updates the PTA bulletin board in the main
hallway at the school. Volunteers needed to chair next year.
Publicity - ongoing
This
committee captures events at Ocean Ave and submits them to local
newspapers. Volunteers
needed Throughout the year to photograph events, write captions and
e-mail to local media. If you have a PR background, or interest in
photography, please consider volunteering.
Reflections
This
committee executes the National PTA Reflections programs at Ocean
Ave. The Reflections program encourages students to express their
thoughts and feelings through the creative arts. Volunteers needed A few times to help sort the entries, prepare them
for judging, and help display them at the Northport Library and at
Ocean Ave. School. Back to Top
Refreshments - ongoing
The
refreshments at our PTA meetings are provided by our Class Parents,
however it is the job of the Refreshments Chairperson to organize a
schedule of their participation, make monthly reminder phone calls,
and keep track of all refreshments supplies. Volunteers needed to be a Chairperson of this committee.
SAVE
The
district-wide SAVE Committee ensures that our district is in
compliance with the New York State Safe Schools Against Violence in
Education Act (Project SAVE). Volunteers needed to co-represent Ocean Avenue. Our representative
will need to attend 3-4 afternoon meetings during the school year
and report back to the PTA.

Scholarship - Spring 2012
The Ocean
Ave PTA awards a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior who
attended Ocean Ave and writes an essay describing their positive
experiences at our school. Volunteers needed In April to review submitted essays and vote on a
winner. (The authors of the essays remain unknown to the judges
until the evening the scholarship is awarded).
School Banking - October - June
School Banking will resume at Ocean Avenue Elementary on in October and will continue throughout the year every Wednesday
morning before the first bell rings. Bank day is every Wednesday morning up until 8:05 (busers and
walkers are welcome). Children may make deposits each week, every
other week or even once a month. School banking is a great way to
reinforce the value of money and practice math skills, while having
fun. If you have already set up an account at First National Bank for your
child, you are ready to begin banking. If
you haven’t and your child would like to participate in school
banking, please stop in at the 105 Main Street branch of First
National Bank of Long Island in Northport. The staff there is very
friendly and will make signing up a fun experience for you and your
child. Your child will then receive a pouch and register from the
bank indicating that his/her account is active. If you have any questions, please call PTA member Jen Montgomery or
Barbara Anderson. You may also call Mary Sullivan at the 105 Main
Street branch in Northport at 631-261-0331. Volunteers needed
Wednesday mornings from 7:45 - 8:15am to assist students with their
deposits. A volunteer schedule will be set-up by the Chairpeople
based on your availability.

School Pictures - October 6, 2011
This
committee works with the photography vendor to provide Fall and
Spring school pictures. Volunteers needed In Fall and Spring to assist in getting students
ready to have their pictures taken. A volunteer schedule will be

School Store - September 1, 2011
This
committee organizes our hugely popular School Store which is open
the last week in August. Volunteers needed to shop for supplies,
and assist in August with sales, set-up and clean-up.

Square 1 Art - TBA
This beloved
fundraiser takes student's artwork and transforms it into gift
items. Volunteers needed To
be Chairperson or Chairpeople of this committee and execute this
fundraise with the vendor Square 1 Art. Individual volunteers also
need to help distribute products when they arrive in May.
Staff Appreciation
Day - May 2, 2011
This
committee organizes our annual Staff Appreciation Day and provides,
breakfast, lunch and snacks for all of Ocean's staff. Volunteers needed to donate items for breakfast, lunch and snack on
- Staff Appreciation Day. This is a great opportunity to prepare
and share a favorite recipe.
Sunshine/Welcoming - September 2011
This
committee promotes good will by welcoming new families, and sending
care packages to students or staff who may be absent due to injury
or illness. Volunteers needed to assist with the purchasing and wrapping of care
packages.

Wellness
This
committee helped develop our school's Wellness Policy and strives to
further educate Ocean's families regarding issues of wellness. Volunteers needed to work with the Chairpeople on developing and
executing wellness programs at Ocean Ave.
Wellness Walk - June 1, 2012
This
committee organizes our annual student's Wellness Walk along with
our School Counselor. Volunteers needed In June to blow up balloons, chaperone the walk,
and provide refreshments at its conclusion.
Wrapping Paper - Sept - Oct 2011
Our biggest
fundraiser of the year!!! Volunteers needed in late October or early November to help distribute
wrapping paper orders when they arrive.
